Prepping an Altered Book

Interested in expressing yourself with images and not sure where to start? Follow along on "Tutorial Tuesdays" to learn new techniques and inspire your creativity.

One of my favorite forms to use for making art is an Altered Book. An altered book uses the pages of an unused book as the canvas for images. Because I value and respect books, I only use old or "damaged" books to alter. Go to http://www.booksalefinder.com to find nearby library sales. Most book sales feature items that are "damaged out" by the library due to mild wear and tear, a bit of water damage, or overstock.

Prepping your book using the techniques below will help maintain the structure of the book spine that holds the pages together. I begin all altered books by carefully removing up to 50% of the pages and gluing several pages together to form a sturdy canvas for my art.
