How to Make Meditation & Feeling Stones
WHAT ARE MEDITATION STONES AND FEELING STONES?
In their physical form, they are glass stones shellacked with collaged images and words. As an art object alone, they are beautiful, but they also have several uses:
A meditation stone with a word or motto can be kept in your pocket to touch in moments when you need to feel grounded.
A set of feeling stones with emotions can help you find the one that labels how you’re feeling in the moment. We have a large set of feeling stones in our art therapy office–we use them to help clients increase their emotional vocabularies and pinpoint exact feelings.
You can also use them like tarot or oracle cards--close your eyes and choose a stone from a bowl, take a look, and see what connections, feelings, or memories it brings up for you today.
Today we’re sharing a tutorial for how to make your own stones.
MATERIALS
Collage images. I often find images I like in Breathe Magazine, National Geographic, Mantra Magazine, and Real Simple. Think outside the box with junk mail, catalogs, newspapers, images printed from online, or old photos.
Words written, typed out on printer paper, or cut from magazines
A brush for applying Mod Podge
Decorative glass stones with a flat side. I use these gems from Michaels—they have some variation and a nice smooth edge for the collage.
INSTRUCTIONS
Cut out your words and images. Check that they will fit onto the flat side of the gem.
You'll layer on the words first so that you can look down through the rounded side of the gem and see the word from underneath.
To glue on, add a thin layer of mod podge onto the gem, apply the word, and add another layer of mod podge on top.
Choose your background image that will be layered on top of the word and glue on in the same manner.
I like to trim the edges after I glue on the imagery and words. This helps me get a smoother edge that is matched to the stone sizing.
Apply 2-3 layers of modge podge to seal the collage onto the gem.
Let cure (mod podge side up) for 2 days or until it is not sticky to touch.
